Our Story

Established in 1962 by our grandfather, Don Lauro, Chicotona was originally a local mezcal sold in Guerrero and Mexico City. Though the brand fell out of operation after his passing in 2009, his legacy would live on.

In 2023, his grandson Daniel revived Chicotona to share our mezcal with a new generation.

THIS ISN'T JUST MEZCAL. THIS IS CHICOTONA.

At the heart of our brand is a deep respect for the land and its history. Chicotona takes its name from a local term for the snake that roamed the agave fields—a tribute to our origins and the land that shapes our mezcal.

Mezcal is inseparable from the regions that produce it, and each area imparts its own character to the final product. While tequila has gained global recognition, mezcal remains a hidden gem, deeply tied to the land, the people, and the hands that create it. Each region brings its own touch to the process, and that’s where Chicotona stands apart.

While celebrity-backed brands flood the market with mass-produced mezcal, they often overlook the craftsmanship that gives this spirit its soul, something Chicotona proudly preserves.

Chicotona draws its roots from Guerrero, a region rich in mezcal tradition but often overlooked. Our founder’s grandfather, Don Lauro, was a pioneer in Guerrero’s mezcal industry, helping establish its reputation as an emerging mezcal-producing state. Mezcals from this region are known for their smooth, floral, and fruit-forward profiles, distinct from Oaxaca’s smokier style.

We found a kindred spirit in Puebla. Like Guerrero, it produces balanced mezcals with expressive flavor and smooth complexity. Puebla’s vibrant, subtly spiced mezcals share Guerrero’s elegance, and its rising reputation made it a natural starting point for Chicotona.

Though Puebla makes only about 3% of Mexico’s mezcal (compared to Oaxaca’s 85–90%), its quality speaks volumes. Chicotona is proud to spotlight these underrepresented regions, celebrating their unique flavors and craftsmanship with every bottle.

Our Partner

At Chicotona, we work with producers who share our commitment to quality and sustainability. That’s why we’ve partnered with the Aguilar family, who’ve been crafting mezcal in Puebla since 2005. Founded by Luis Aguilar, their operation was built to protect local ecosystems and ensure sustainable production, efforts that have helped preserve the region’s wild agave.

While mezcal has long been a male-dominated industry, the Aguilar legacy is now led by Luis’s three daughters, including the maestra mezcalera, Michel, who carry the craft forward. Together, we honor tradition, embrace innovation, and share a deep respect for the land in every bottle of Chicotona.
